Services we can offer
KnowNet can offer a range of services to help projects and organisations maintain a dynamic presence on the web. We can be particularly helpful if some combination of the following matter to you:
- Being easily able to take control of your own site content
- Excellent presentation of site content, with very clear navigation
- Excellent support for community-building activities such as focused online discussions
- Support for project-management features online
- Being able to work together with experts to co-develop the features and content that matter to you
- Knowing that you can move your site and its content to another host or content-management system in the future without fuss
- Knowing that your site will benefit from ongoing software and feature-development work from the Open-Source movement
- Accessibility of your site to people who have special requirements or use special tools or browsers for accessing webpages
- Support for web standards and other emerging interoperability standards, so that your site looks good in every browser, and interacts well with other sites and services
We can also be particularly useful to projects or organisations which want to base their sites on existing open-source software - in particular Zope and Plone - but need extra features which require intensive customisation or special software-development work. Zope and Plone are extremely powerful, and are gaining a lot of attention and support both among people who want to easily maintain their own sites, and among software developers who want their work to contribute to longer term improvements in the 'two-way web'. But these web-application frameworks have very steep learning curves; it takes much intense experience to get the most out of them, especially to know how to meet users' feature requests effectively and rapidly. We at KnowNet have been developing extensively in Zope and Plone for some time now, and are confident of our ability to understand and meet the particular needs of your own sites within the framework of Zope and / or Plone.
See our communities pages for some examples of the kind of work KnowNet is doing to help organisations to create and maintain high-quality, dynamic websites.
We can also help you to improve your existing open-source based websites by developing special 'products' you can install in the sites to add functionality to them. Some products to enhance Zope and Plone are available as free downloads in our downloads area; we can offer advice and support for installing these products in your own sites, and for adapting them to your particular needs. We have a number of other product lines in current development, and can, on request, push forward special solutions based on this work; examples are: special tools and wizards for creating and managing complex questionnaires, highly graphical data-gathering and data-visualising solutions based on the Scalable Vector Graphics standard, and special interfaces for managing task or goal-oriented discussions and collaborations.
