KNFastFolders - dynamic ajaxian sitemap (now deprecated for KNotes blogging and discussion)
KNFastFolders is a fast ajaxian dynamic sitemap for plone content. It provides a very compact rowset-based liasting of the content of a folderish object, in which sub-folders can be expanded either through normal links or ajaxian in-place expansion). It is meant to address the irritating scenario in which a user must suffer a succession of long rount-trips loading the full plone-interface while drilling down to find nested content.,/p>
We had also been trying to co-opt fast_folders view as a forum-like view for weblog entries and threaded discussion, but the interface was never completed and the metaphor was not appealing to end-users so we have abandoned fast_folders as a KNotes-content view. As of March 2006 KNotes threaded discussion has a special forum view which is much more appealing to end-users. KNotes' forum view combines fast ajaxian options for browsing threads with ajaxian access to the usual weblog navigational affordances such as categories, archives and calendars.
We had also originally intended to use fast_folders for quick, convenient content-creation, structuring and editing. We had a lot of ajaxian code in hand from previous content-management systems we had worked on, which needed adapting to Plone/CMF. Sadly, we never found time to migrate that code (except for the now-deprecated knotes content editing). Our plans for making editing site content quicker are now based on our indexFolder product.
We may completely deprecate fast_folders later in 2006. We still find it useful for drilling into very content-deep sites such as the NGRF, but are exploring OPML-centred alternatives. Feel free to make use of it and let us know what you think.
