German railways get priorities right

I'm mot sure whether this is true. But it is a great story in the dead news space of August when it is even hard to find much to say about educational technology. From the International Herald Tribune

"Germany's national railway wasn't about to risk sending a trainload of soccer fans to a German Cup match without beer.

Federal police said Monday that the beer tap failed aboard a special train carrying Bayer Leverkusen fans to Hamburg on Saturday. The fault was discovered half an hour into the journey.

"In order not to endanger the good mood" of the passengers, railway officials halted the train in Wuppertal for 25 minutes and had a replacement part delivered by taxi, a police statement said. It added that there was no trouble among the fans."

Typisch Deutsch, oder? Man kann nicht zu viel trinken, sondern zu wenig vertragen! :-) Und halb besoffen ist rausgeschmissenes Geld , so sagt man! It's just reminded me of the Pt Navy. A ship might not have all the crew members on board or be prepared to its full capacity; still the ship would leave port towards its Mission. What it's never happen though - so I've heard - was a ship setting sail without having restocked the beer/wine compartment. No wonder the Pt ships are always the most popular ones while docked on the (German) Ports. The fact that there is still alcohol on board is that it is claimed to be a tradition, and you don't want to mess up with the old naval traditions! I think the DeutschBahn might have thought the same! :-)
