The PLE is not a system, but a concept.
The PLE wiki defines a PLE as systems that help learners take control of and manage their own learning.I do not agree with this. A PLE is a concept, not a system. Different applications (especially web services) can be integrated and used as a PLE. So, I think a PLE is more SOA-based (although applications not always have to be integrated, they can also become combined). This would imply that a PLE is not the same LMS/VLE+Web 2.0. It's personalisation, networking and collaborating. See my comments in a different blog entry.

Not sure I agree with you on this Wilfred. social awareness is a central part of learning - if you define learning as I dop as a social activity. I am unconvinced by FOAF type networks. Just becuase someone is a friend of my friend does not make them MY friend. We all work in multiple networks with multiple contacts. For instance, I am passinately interested in Werder Bremen football club. I have many friends who share this interest. But I am not sure that many of you on the WLP forum, who share my interest in communities of practice and the use of ICT for learning. will necesarily be fans of Werder (although you should be!).
